INTERVIEW BASICS
How to answer “Tell me about yourself”
The interviewer is usually asking for a useful professional introduction, not your entire life story.
Use a present-past-next structure
Present
Begin with the professional value you bring now: your field, strongest abilities, and the kind of problems you solve.
Past
Choose one or two experiences that support the job. Focus on relevant accomplishments rather than listing every position.
Next
Connect that background to why this position interests you and what you hope to contribute.
Example: “I have spent my career improving operations for service organizations, most recently leading a team responsible for customer support and process improvement. We reduced response times while improving customer satisfaction. I am now looking for a role where I can bring that combination of team leadership and practical problem-solving to a growing organization.”
Keep it focused
A useful answer is often one to two minutes. Practice aloud so the answer sounds natural rather than memorized. You can adjust the emphasis for each job while keeping every fact true.
What to avoid
- Repeating your resume from the beginning
- Sharing personal details unrelated to the role
- Speaking negatively about a former employer
- Giving a general answer that never connects to this job
Practice in your own words.
